On 31 March 2022, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Haughey CBE, planted the final tree and unveiled a commemorative plaque at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Wood. Guests from across Lanarkshire witnessed the planting, including Deputy Lieutenants of Lanarkshire, members of the Armed Forces, Cadet representatives, and partnering organisations.
In collaboration with the Lowland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA), Lady Haughey is spearheading Lanarkshire’s projects to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by planting the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Wood at Dechmont Range and Training Area.
2,700 native trees have now been planted over three acres at Dechmont to create the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Wood. The wood will be one of Lanarkshire’s enduring legacies to honour the Queen’s 70-year reign.
As part of the Queen’s Green Canopy tree planting initiative, community groups are strongly encouraged to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.’ But where community groups do not have access to suitable local land, then trees will be planted free of charge at Dechmont for them.
Dechmont Range and Training Area is a military training ground, managed on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, by Lowland RFCA. The site is just south of Cambuslang, and is frequently used by both military and civilian users.
Lady Haughey said: ‘I am thrilled to be planting the final tree of Platinum Jubilee Wood.
‘This has been months in the making and demonstrates how Lanarkshire has come together to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
‘In line with the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, we’ve been careful to plant native and sustainable trees which will leave a lasting environmental legacy for future generations.’
