Seven Reservists and two Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) have been formally recognised by the Lord-Lieutenant for the City of Glasgow for their diligence and dedication to service.

The ceremony, which took place at Glasgow City Chambers on Tuesday 14 January, saw the recipients receive Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificates of Meritorious Service.

The Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren, who also serves as His Majesty The King’s personal representative for the City of Glasgow, signed and presented each certificate to thank the Reservists and volunteers for their significant contribution to Defence over the course of their careers.

In total, seven Reservists from local Army, Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) and Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) units received Certificates of Meritorious Service during the ceremony. The recipients currently serve with the following units:

  • 602 Squadron (City of Glasgow) Royal Auxiliary Air Force
  • Glasgow & Strathclyde University Officers’ Training Corps, Army
  • HMS Dalriada, Royal Naval Reserve
  • 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (6 SCOTS), Army

Warrant Officer 1 David Giulianotti, a Reservist with HMS Dalriada whose military career spans over three decades, was thrilled to be recognised with a certificate, commenting: ‘Receiving this award is a testament to the incredible support and opportunities I have been given through the Royal Naval Reserve, as well as the support from my family, friends, and other members of the Reserves.

‘For me, the highlights of being a Reservist are the camaraderie, training and travel opportunities and being able to achieve things you never thought would be possible.’

602 Squadron’s Flight Lieutenant Alexander McKenzie was equally delighted to have been nominated for the award: ‘It was a bit of a surprise to be honest, but it’s a wonderful reflection on a decade of Reserve service following a decade of Regular service.

‘Reserve Service has provided me with so many different opportunities, from civic duties in Glasgow to NATO courses in Germany and international exercises in Malaysia and Singapore. The possibilities really are endless with a career in the Reserves.’

Awards were also presented to two CFAVs from Glasgow & Lanarkshire Battalion Army Cadet Force (ACF), acknowledging their commitment to providing the best possible learning and development experiences for the Cadets in their charge.

Second Lieutenant Cheryl Mulligan, whose volunteer service inspired a career change from customer service to nursing after helping to pilot the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme within her Battalion, remarked of her win: ‘It’s a privilege to receive this award and to be recognised for the service I’ve provided to Cadets.

‘For my first couple of years, I was a Detachment Instructor teaching new Cadets, then I went on to become a Detachment Commander with the Pipes & Drums and it was brilliant seeing the Cadets gaining music qualifications alongside their military star levels.

‘I am now a First Aid Training & Medical Support Officer, providing Cadets and adults with valuable life-saving skills and qualifications. Everything I have gained, including my current job with the NHS at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, has been through Cadets.’

The event at City Chambers also saw two local Forces-friendly organisations receive their Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Bronze Award. EDC Scotland and Energy Technical Academy Group each received their company’s awards from Naval Regional Commander for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Brigadier Andy Muddiman.

EDC Scotland’s Technical Director David Kerr commented: ‘On behalf of EDC I would like to thank everyone that made us so welcome when we received our Bronze Award in such a terrific venue. Three persons attended from EDC and we were all overwhelmed on receiving this award.

‘We are all so proud of our support and connection with the Armed Forces and look forward to what I am confident will be a strong and lasting working relationship with the Defence community.’

Colonel Ted Shields, Chief Executive of Lowland RFCA, said of this year’s award recipients: ‘I congratulate and thank all our Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, Cadets and Civilians whose dedication and service have been officially recognised by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for the City of Glasgow.

‘It is often said that our Reservists and volunteers are “twice the citizen” – committed to serving our Nation and their communities on top of their everyday jobs and personal lives. It is a tall order, and those who have received Certificates of Meritorious Service have gone above and beyond in this respect. Their respective units and organisations have all benefited from their skills, determination and selflessness. They are a credit to the Defence community and the Nation. Thank you and well done.’
