On Wednesday 10 July members of Edinburgh District Sea Cadets joined friends and fellow volunteers from Trinity, Leith and Grangemouth for a special Armed Forces event at Sky TV’s Livingston office.
Sky TV, which signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2019, was keen to showcase to its employees the full range of skills and experience that can be gained through involvement in the Armed Forces and Cadet organisations, and welcomed representatives from not just the Sea Cadets but also the Army and the Royal Air Force.
Throughout the day, the Sea Cadets enjoyed the opportunity to meet Sky TV staff and visitors and to share information on the impressive array of skills that young people can gain both on and off the water as a member of the Sea or Royal Marines Cadets. To illustrate this, the Cadets gave demonstrations in how to tie knots that are useful when boating, and the Sky TV staff in turn had a chance to try on buoyancy aids and learn all they could want to know about becoming a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer.
The Armed Forces event also gave the Cadets a chance to have some fun themselves, as they explored the other Armed Forces stalls and tested out some of the challenges laid out for the visitors.
District Officer Lieutenant (SCC) Ewan Galloway RNR commented of the event: ‘The Cadets had a great time during the day and were able to develop their confidence through speaking to various employees and conducting demonstrations.
‘The whole group was very well looked after by the Sky team and we’re very grateful to them for inviting us along to take part in their Armed Forces day.’
